They switch takes places in midair, and so when prince lets the blanket drop to the floor, the audience makes the connection that he transformed. In reality it is two actors who switches spots in mid air. Sorry to ruin the magic, but I agree its frustrating when you really want to know how it is done =)

While down on the stage, the double who is hooked up to a flying bed sort of thing "dies". He is then lifted up for the very beautiful and dramatic transformation scene. He twirls a bit and the audience is distracted by the flashy lights and sparks going off. There is a few seconds of black out in which the stunt double gets lifted up all the way into the flys and out of the audience's sight and the prince who is covered with a blanket gets lowered down from the flys to stage.

While the stunt double is pretending to be the beast, the main actor has a quick costume change into the prince's attire and he goes up to the flys and there he wraps himself with a blanket that looks just like the blanket belle covers the beast with when he gets stabbed. The main actor (beast) who is now in Prince's costume wrapped by a blanket then gets hooked on flying cables and waits in the flys of the theatre for the transformation music.

The audience don't notice the switch because it takes place behind one of the set pieces and is very cleverly masked. Voice of the best saying "you came back" and other dying dialogues are pre recorded so that the stunt double does not have to speak. He merely moves his mouth.

@death2morrow If you really want to know, read on. Spoiler Alert, it is going to ruin the magic! The following information is from someone who used to work on the show that I met at a coffee shop. In the show, the beast gets stabbed by Gaston and Belle wraps him in a blanket with her help he stumbles back into the "west wing". While belle is helping him back into the castle, the actor who plays the beast cleverly switches with a stunt double.

Awesome transformation! I love it! We're doing Beauty and the Beast for our spring musical and I hope we do the transformation like this!
I find his amazing that Steve Blanchard did the show for 8 years and never got sick of it! Then again, if I got cast as Belle in the broadway show, I'd probably never get sick of it either.

i know how they did it, we did the same thing for our production because we had the stage manager for the profession production in Aus be out lighting designer. it was amazing :D............ annnd i was the beast/prince and flying is fun :)

seeing that Brooke Tansley started her sint as Belle in September of 2004, I'd say it would be some time after then :)
