Barack Obama
06/25/08 (Press Conference)

Short-Term Relief Agenda:
1. Send out a 2nd round of stimulus rebate checks
2. Impose a windfall profits tax on oil companies
3. Provide an average $1000 tax cut to middle class families (95% of Americans)
4. Close the Enron Loophole that allows for speculation's unregulated upward pressure on gas prices

  • Yeah so taxing and putting that money into alternative development isnt going to create new jobs? Whos going to run the plants? Build Them? THINK

  • basically TAXES n MORE JOBS.. not juz TAX TAX TAX..if dems wind then TAX TAX TAX MORE UNEMPLOYMENT MONEY GOES TO UNEMPLOYMENT LESS JOB FOR AMERICANS BUT MORE FOR CHINESE N INDIANS(IN INDIA)

  • Wether my conspiracy theory is simply a theory or not does not take away from my argument, that you keep ignoring. We can increase the use of alternatives and split the demand between oil and the alts. If we guzzle all of our oil before we donate enough time and spending into research for more alts, our current alts will not be able to support us alone.

  • You run out of arguments and thus resort to conspiracy theories. Oil companies have a profit margin that's lower than that of Banks, Pharmaceuticals and many other industries. But I am glad this topic gets so much attention, so let's make this election a referendum: Everyone who wants to pay $9.00 a gallon vote for Obama, the rest for McCain. Suits me.

  • Okay, veedubyuh82. Tell me how you republicans plan to pay for research into alternatives. This republican administration has made it impossible for research industries to pay for it on their own. Whats wrong with taxing the rich an amount that is simply a drop in the bucket to their enormous buckets of wealth, for the greater good of the World? Because they have shown they won't donate the money on their own. No one wants to give back to their country anymore, let alone their neighbors.

  • Do you not get it? Oil companies have so much power. When the oil supply finally starts completely depleting, do you know who is going to have the alternatives for us? Thats right the oil companies, I'm certain that Big Oil is keeping the alts away from us so they don't lose their business, and maintain their current record profit.

Secondly, dont put words in my mouth. The entire reason I didn't say "replace" was to lower the demand of BOTH energy sources. We can't rely on one source alone.

  • too bad you refuse to see how its gonna be done--TAX,TAX,TAX!!![the"true" democrats way of"fixing" things].....

  • Then why isn't it working in Europe where gasoline costs $9.00 a gallon? Supply and demand doesn't work in London? Why should we replace $4.00 a gallon fossil fuel gas with $10.00+ alternative fuel??? Don't teach me about economics, I have a PhD in econ.

Besides, I have heard for the last 20 years that the breakthrough in renewables is right around the corner. Let's drill and if miraculously alt fuel becomes cheaper (waaaaayyy cheaper) then we shut down the oil rigs. ;)

  • Sorry we true dems see right through big oil's attempts to fool the american people into thinking there is some kind of shortage.

  • Well the rich our obviously not going to throw there money into the good of the american people. The most the rich will do is put money into commercials encouraging the development of alternatives, or in exxonmobil's case, commercials supporting there wealth sucking, environment killing monopoly. The government has no choice but to tax now. And I really don't see whats wrong with it.
