A recording of Piazzolla's third Tango Etude - Molto marcato e energico. Rarely, as far as I can tell, performed on bass clarinet. Recording gear same as all my other videos. Not a perfect recording by far, but I felt like it had been too long since I was under the mic and wanted to throw some new stuff up.

Recorded 21st of December, 2010.

  • Really beautiful Technique. Nice demonstration... I wanted to hear more tango on bass clarinet . If you did this with accompaniment what would it be?

Who are you and what are you hoping to accomplish by posting all these solos?

  • @biomanmusic Cheers mate. I had another one of these etudes just about ready to record but a bunch of other committments came up all at once stopping me. There will definitely be more going up, I just can't give any sort of time frame now! These are written with piano accompaniment, but I'm playing them off the flute score so pitches wouldn't match. Also, I vastly prefer the freedom offered by them being unaccompanied. The written piano part is what you'd expect - tango-ish.

  • @biomanmusic As for the second part of your comment, I'm a Sydney based clarinettist, currently teaching and working as a musicology staff member at the Sydney Conservatorium. I put up these solos because I enjoy the recording process, I like setting goals for myself, and I'm liking the process of building up a log of what I've been doing and pieces I've enjoyed playing.

  • AMAZING!! I can't believe you pulled this off on bass clarinet!!! :D

  • @crazydhesi Thanks - it's pretty far from my best playing though. There's so much that can go wrong in that bloody piece!

  • nice piece... great sound, compliments !

  • @bassoclarinetto Thanks mate!

  • awsome work i love your sound these one of my faorite piazzolla pieces on one of my favorite instruments thanks for sharing

  • what reeds # do u use

  • Thanks much for the responses. I'm a clarinetist with a day job in California. Bass Clarinet lends itself beautifully to tango and choro, I think but its rare to hear someone with the technique to do it justice. You make it beautifully listenable.

The reason I was curious about the accompaniment is that it is evdient there are gaps in the theme...not a bad thing, really but an opportunity for bass clarinet fill.. and to my ear, a chance to demonstrate the astonishing range of the instrument.
