FS #40; FSV# 36.
The fight song of the Charlotte 49ers, and NO, they have no relation to the football team in San Francisco, however the area had a goal rush before California had theirs (1838-I'd say it's a misnomer).
The university is part of the University of North Carolina system and became part of the Atlantic 10 in mid 2000's after some years in Conference USA.

  • Wow, the branch campus of the UNC system is going against the main (Chapel Hill) for the NCAA championship in Men's Soccer. How will this interstate face-off go in Alabama? Watch tomorrow....

  • @excelsior27 Oh well, denied by the founding school for the system, but second place is not bad.

  • Although History doesn't tell much about it, there was a gold rush in Charlotte North Carolina around the same time that the western world had theirs, 1849. It is also on highway 49, and was established, not founded but established in 1949. Founded in 1946. UNCC!!! Go Niners!!!!!!!!

  • Correct. It was in the fighting spirit of those individuals who in 1949 persuaded the state to allow the school to continue beyond it's originally scheduled date of closure. To preserve their legacy and encourage all students and alumni to never forget that anything can be achieved through perseverance and dedication that the school mascot changed from the Owl's to the 49ers. (Side Note- They were originally the Owls because of the former servicemen usually attended night classes after work!)

  • @edgehringer. My last year at UNC-Charlotte in 1996, I noticed on the campus phone book her name. So I called her and asked that question. She says that in 1946, the state had asked to run the Charlotte campus for World War II veterans and GI's in Charlotte because Chapel Hill was too far. But the state decided to close the Charlotte campus in 1949. Bonnie went to to city school district to keep the school alive. Hence, the nickname 49ers.

  • I believe they are called the 49ers because the school is located on North Carolina Highway 49. Can't see that it has anything to do with gold.
