The Yosemite Mariposa Tourism Bureau, the Mariposa County Chamber of Commerce and numerous Mariposa merchants are preparing for what is sure to be a nice boon for Mariposa -- the arrival of the AMGEN (bike) Tour of California. The article below, released in July last year, provides details about the expanded 2009 tour. Stage 4 adds a route from Merced to Clovis via Mariposa.
The path originally took riders directly from 140 onto 49S., essentially bypassing town. Steve Waldron, Caltrans Permit Engineer wasted no time recommending to AMGEN planners that the Tour should add a short loop through the picturesque town of Mariposa. Officials agreed. Now, the pro bicycle racers (including Lance Armstrong) will turn right onto 11th street and right onto Bullion past the Historic Courthouse to 3rd street and back to 49S. The route will continue on to Oakhurst and beyond. See details of the Stage 4 leg of the race and town routes.
In total 1.6M people are expected to view the race. Mariposa provides obvious benefits as a viewing venue, among them a lack of congestion, beauty and services that aren't available along much of the route. Some 128 riders will arrive in Mariposa (town) around noon on Wednesday, Feb 18, 2009.
In Mariposa, spectators will find a festive atmosphere with welcome signs, red, white and blue bunting (on loan from the Historic Wawona Hotel); the MCHS Grizzly Marching band will be performing on the corner of 7th and 140 in front of Martha's Boutique and the newly re-opened Sugar Pine restaurant. The MCHS Cheerleaders will offer up rousing cheers from the court house lawn. At 8th street and 140 the History Center will be providing a historically/culturally appropriate display as 8th marks the end of a "Sprint" which is a race within the race. It will be an ideal viewing location. Media is expected to be here in mass, the race will be aired live on Versa channel (cable TV) and aired live on www.amgentourofcalifornia.com
