Angell disputes the industry's reputation as an "engine of innovation," arguing that the top U.S. drug makers spend 2.5 times as much on marketing and administration as they do on research. At least a third of the drugs marketed by industry leaders were discovered by universities or small biotech companies, writes Angell, but they're sold to the public at inflated prices. She cites Taxol, the cancer drug discovered by the National Institutes of Health, but sold by Bristol-Myers Squibb for $20,000 a year, reportedly 20 times the manufacturing cost. The company agreed to pay the NIH only 0.5 percent in royalties for the drug.

The majority of the new products the industry puts out, says Angell, are "me-too" drugs, which are almost identical to current treatments but "no better than drugs already on the market to treat the same condition." Around 75 percent of new drugs approved by the FDA are me-too drugs. They can be less effective than current drugs, but as long as they're more effective than a placebo, they can get the regulatory green light.

  • These stupid companies have detterd me from doing my PhD just because they feared a negative result, Pfizer is one of them! They have rejected my PhD proposal. However they fund stupid research just for marketing motives rather than scientific ones.

  • Maybe write a PhD paper on all the natural equivalents of every synthetic drug out there? Research in different countries.

  • Dr. Daniel J. Rader: Does the world really need another STATIN? The world doesn't benefit, but your bank account does.

The marketing goes mainly to convince people that one ME TOO drug is better than the other despite the lack of any evidence on that score. Thanks VASCULAR STRATEGIES.

Also thanks Daniel J. Rader, MD for your continued (psychopathic) harassment of my friend.

  • You may be one of eighteen million Americans who suffer from 'O.N.B.S' Or odd number blinking syndrome, studies have shown if you blink in a even number every 60 seconds (or minute) you are a much more healthy being, less prone to stress and headache. Ask your doctor about Evenblinkatrol now so you can be as happy and care free when you used to blink in a even number per minute

  • Reminds me of the little boy who went to the store and asked for Tampax. The clerk asked him if he knew what it was for and he said no. The clerk asked him why he wanted it if he didn't know what it was for. The boy replied "Well, the commercial says if I use Tampax I'll be able to swim, play tennis and ride a horse, and I can't do any of those things."

  • anyone know what the drug being advertised in the commercial at the end is?

  • only good pills are Vicodin and Demerol... those give me no side effects (except the Vicodin if i take too much it makes my stomach upset but theres Vicoprofen and that doesnt). I can see why micheal jackson died from demerol cause it makes you feel like your in heaven

  • So true!! they are a moster! it's all about money..people die by the thousands because of interactions and side effecs, allergies. People want to take a pill for everything they forget these are CHEMICALS that effect other parts of your body like hhmmm your LIVER!
