I have this exact same problem -- with a Motu Traveler -- all the latest drivers and Cubase software too.

Hey man, I was just wondering if this has ever been fixed with a driver update. it seems that the 828 mk3 comes with a lot of bells and whisteles considering its price, but if it comes with driver stability issues then it might not be worthwile afterall. Would be great if you could let me know since I was seriously considering this piece, since I now need more inputs. THANKS..;-)

output: 23.500

Thank you for posting this.... i'm just in the process of sending my motu 828mk3 back for repair, I had similar problems connected to the firewire port, latency and buffer settings went crazy.. just as you outlined... motu top of the range my ass...
