Here is my old Dell Optiplex GX110 running Windows 7 because I wanted to show people that it would run. Its actually somewhat usable which is surprising. It shows that Microsoft did a pretty good job in making Windows 7 run on low end systems, considering this thing is from 2000. The 512MB RAM upgrade certainly helps things out a lot.

Unfortunately there are no drivers for the integrated graphics card (so it only allows 640x480 resolution) or for the audio/ethernet. The only way I could get online was by using a PCI wifi card.

UPDATE: I ran Windows Update and it found drivers for the ethernet card and the sound card. It detected my monitor and downloaded something for it but its still only allowing VGA resolution. Im going to be reformatting the HDD soon and going back to 2000.

  • And did you replace the HDD to get Windows 7 because this one is a bit different sounding.

  • @an65001 Yes i have Windows 2000 installed on the stock 8GB HDD, but had to swap it with a spare 40GB drive so Windows 7 would have enough space to install.

  • @spunker88 What brand are the 8GB, and 40GB, respectively? I'm pretty sure the 8GB is Seagate and the 40GB is Maxtor.

  • @an65001 The 8GB is the original from 2000, a Maxtor. The 40GB is a Western Digital

  • But why the Vista-Style Boot loader?

  • @an65001 Windows 7 does this on computers with too low of a resolution. On many netbooks it will show the Vista boot screen and on this system I only had 640x480 due to no graphics driver.

  • Awesome!!! I have a museum of old systems that I still use. Wonder if it work with my Dell Dim w/ Win 98 (ha ha) I just upgraded to Win7! I too have a Dell gx110, which I just re-upgraded it so it won't crash when I look at it (it's very temperamental). The Win7 runs on the newest member of my collection- an HP pavilion 7-1111....which despite my old school preference for Dell (they were great back in '98)- it's good computer.

  • To think that in 2000 it was $1400

    Know it's free practically

  • @spunker88 Ohh. Now I get it. Installing Windows 7 on old computers or netbooks would give the Vista-Style Boot Loader.

  • YIKES! It was running Windows 2000 now 7!?
