I'm indo, my mother is 2nd gen dutch living in indonesia my dad is javanese. we live in canada now, but this is what I think. the dutch are better tradesman than the native indo. so at the end they control everything. I do not blame the dutch, but the corruption and mismanagement of the indo gov. we should have a leg start with what the dutch leave us, but instead we destroy it. the criminal and civil law is still based on the old dutch law. that's my view.

@TheDutchKnight That's true. Around 1611 - 1619 the VOC destroyed Jayakarta and built Batavia, conquered some important trading bases violantly and went bankrupt in the 1790ties. From 1800 on, the Dutch terrorized continuously the archipelago until it reached the current size of Indonesia.

@Javasurfer1970 Your forget something. you said that the dutch needed 317 years to take controll over Indonesia but that isn't true. You have to know that the VOC is a trading company so it can't colonise anything. After 1800 Indonesia became a part of the Dutch empire.

Most people bashing Dutch don't know our culture. In the past it was evil maybe, but todaý it's the best democracy in the world you can be. Think again before bashing Dutch. Think America is the symbol of Democracy ?!! haha... we where so free to let all your immigrants in , today 50% almost if foreigner, we don't care, but many of these people are destroying our culture by not adapting. However Asian people do adapt very well!

US and Europe today are nothing but DEBTS, financial system were created by the Europeans, Free Trade and all is finding its balances, during the IT bubble, 2008 financial meltdown, Indonesian GDP is still 4,5%. our country is rich of resources, come to think of it, if unfortunate events do occur. we still could raise chickens, and many other agriculture in our backyards, AMEN

the infrastructure were build only to support the commodity extraction etc, more over till today Indonesia are still colonized by Multinationals, which makes no different than VOC (the first Multinational company in the world), as Indonesian we should learn from our mistakes and move forward, As dutch being one of first mover advantage in trading capabilities and still to think that commodity extraction without knowledge transfer plus leaves nothing but a big mess is fine. youll be the judge...

@83UtrechtNL Proud of getting bankrupt or being a slave trader in Africa? No thx. Before the dutch came, there was a well working trade network from the east coast of Africa to China. The Kingdoms and Sultanates were rich. The biggest Kingdom was Majapahit (1293 - 1527), which had nearly the same size like Indonesia has now. Majapahit needed 51 years to reach that size. The Dutch needed 317 yrs and they never controlled it well. Indonesia is doing better than ever... without the Dutch.

@Javasurfer1970 They should be proud of being part of our glorious empire for 350 years. When the Dutch left it got worse with Indonesia so get your facts right. At least we brought you some infastructure, trade, development, organisation, education, etc. You had nothing before we came, then you got some good Dutch leaders but ofcourse at a price.

I agree to reject colonialism now, but at the time it was normal, and the Dutch were just good at it, and at making money.
