Polar bear girl Flocke is teething.....

Flocke's first teeth are growing. In the upper jaw both eyeteeth and an inciser have broken through. This morning the little polar bear baby already weighed 5,7 kilogram with a length of 65 cm. "Apart from that everything is as before". Flocke is now 8 weeks old.

With the "mirror experiment" where a 70x30 cm mirror is introduced into Flocke's living quarters, the care-givers want to show her that apart from humans other creatures are part of her life as well. However, she will never be able to recognize herself: "According to the latest findings, apart from humans, only apes and dolphins are able to recognize themselves in a mirror image. Even human children are usually only able to do this at an average age of 3 years."

Flocke bekommt Zähne ...
Flockes Milchgebiss ist im Werden. Im Oberkiefer sind die beiden Eckzähne und ein Schneidezahn durchgebrochen.
Das inzwischen bereits 65 Zentimeter große Eisbärmädchen wog heute früh 5,7 Kilogramm. „Ansonsten ist alles beim Alten". - Flocke ist jetzt 8 Wochen alt.

Mit dem "Spiegel-Experiment", bei dem Flocke ein 70 mal 30 Zentimeter großer Spiegel vorgehalten wird, wollen die Pfleger dem Eisbärmädchen zeigen, dass zu ihrem künftigen Lebensumfeld nicht nur menschliche Wesen gehören. Sich selbst erkennen wird sie jedoch nie: "Außer den Menschen sind nach heutigen Erkenntnissen nur Menschenaffen und Delfinwale in der Lage, sich im Spiegel mit ihrem Abbild zu identifizieren. Und selbst Menschenkindern gelingt dies erst durchschnittlich im Alter von drei Jahren".
