http://www.euroncap.com/tests/bmw_5_series_2004/208.aspx Frontal Impact takes place at 64 Km/h, 40% of the width of the car striking a deformable barrier. In the side impact, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door at 50 km/h. In the pole test, the car tested is propelled sideways at 29km/h into a rigid pole.

It's not good and it certainly isn't excellent. The E60 was initially a three star car, at a time when the Audi A6, Mercedes E-Class, Renault Vel Satis, Saab 9-5 were all achieving 5-stars. The cars seemed to react terribly to the side impact test. The BMW engineers in charge of safety should have been sacked, and the release of the E60 back in 2003 should have been delayed until it achieved 5 stars.
