  • Nice warm pleasant sound over the first pre especialy when you drive the pre 73's output tranny, the golden age pre is very warm with a little lower bump mid sound even on my little lap top speakers...I ordered this preamp yesterday-such a big sound with the gap 73....what mic?sm57/58?

  • @jimsi SM57

  • Thanks Rotren: I'll be getting one this year some time. I had originally thought that I'd have to pay at least $800 for a decent preamp and have been aware of the reviews on this preamp since before I bought the Golden Age ribbon mic.

Now that my local Long & McQuade shop has them in stock, I have it on good authority that this preamp is all that the manufacturer claims.

I'd have been happier to hear some vocals since that is what I'll be using it for but your video is excellent.

  • @JimLaddie Thanks, it's a great sounding preamp.

  • sounds awsome man! does the premic help you geta better tone when micing a cab?

  • @kissrocks45 Yes, it gives you a better guitar tone for sure, unless you already have a quality mic pre, which I didn't.

  • It sounded better with the preamp level down...

  • Thanks for the great demo! I've been looking for something like this. I actually have a tascam close to the one you used, so this is a great comparison for me.

  • 6:37 nice harmonic distortion, great tone. Not as nice as some preamps, but definitely way better than almost any other preamp at this price. A little brittle in some places, though, I think this one paired with a limiter would be a good idea. I know the MKII versions of this preamp come with an insert jack and lower noise (I have the earlier version) but feeding this into my C300 rounded out the peaks. Use as an insert per-conversion, to eliminate digital flatlines.

  • @mesaoneCCK for lower-budget folks, try a MS technique with a Fathead II on one channel (duplicate channels, invert phase on one), SM-57 on the other.

  • Two of these amps, R-121/101 ribbon on one channel paired with either MD421, SM-57, SM-7B, or RE-20 on the other channel. Mix until done, beautiful!

  • Wow the difference would seem subtle but not really. The GAP had me feeling like I was listening to a record! Very cool.

  • Thanks for the demo

  • This is a nice demo... I have a Pre-73 that I am using with my Rhodes piano... I don´t know much about sound setups... I can´t apreciete much differences from this video maybe due to the bad quality of my PC computer... but I can tell you know a lot.... so.... what is your personal conclusion? how do you like the GAP- Pre 73??

  • does it make a hiss at high level of gain?what cables do I need to conect to a interface?

  • does it make a hiss at high level of gain?
