This video shows two phase carbon dioxide at 1100 psi transitioning to a super critical fluid as it is heated above 31C. The video was created in a high pressure view cell in the laboratory of Dr. Jerry King in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Arkansas.

  • The effect is called critical opalescence. It is caused by fluctuations in the density of the fluid which causes changes in the way that light passes through the fluid.

  • @Icix1 No, what most people learn in chemistry or physics, is a tristate phase diagram. But at a certain point, with high enough pressure and temperature, the fluid becomes "supercritical". This is a state of matter where the fluid has fluid solvation properties, while having gaseous permeability. A perfect way to extract substances tightly bound where liquids can't go (due to surface tension), but need to be dissolved like in liquid.

  • wait so is a supercritical fluid an inbetween state between liquid and gas?

  • I am. Pm me with details. Location , price, ect thanks !

  • where does the lighting effects come from? do the light change in any way or is it because the co2 gets passable for light on some point?

sry for my english hard to ask scientifical questions if you are neighter a native speaker nor educated in physics and chemistry in english :p

  • Very nice. ;D
