Doc says that it is due to repeated cold water trauma to the ear so if you don't surf/dive in cold water it's should be too much of and issue or you're lucky :).

I think some people are more prone to it than others from what I gather. I had a medical last autaum and there still wasn't any sign of it closing up at all.. which i'd expected it to show somthing seeing as i never wear a hood or plugs. Happy days! :D (for now i guess) :o
