13 February 2007 - Team Dumb & Dumber continue on the Plymouth to Banjul old banger rally in their £300 Peugeot 205, with new friends The Life Mechanics, in their old Jeep. Our guide Mohammed Abdul, came with us from Dakhla, across the 6km minefield, into Mauritania, via the tedious, hot and dusty Sahara border controls. We'd left Dakhla before dawn, and arrived in Mohammed's home town at dusk. A wierd anarchic place, but rather endearing in a strange way! Pinched between the Atlantic and the Sahara, the town didn't exist 20 years ago! Mohammed insisted we stay at his home, and invited friends and family round to meet us and the Life Mechanics, and share a vast bowl of goat tagine, eating with the hands. Very welcoming folk, lots of fun trying to have deep conversations in poor schoolboy French. When we discussed the ever present goats, they were suprised that Keith keeps a few in Devon, and shocked when he said he "loves" them! That took some explaining, and I think they regarded him with some anxiety after that!

  • Can you get a beer there? I'm planning a Saharan journey for 2010 (my first) but a little worried about not being able to have a glass of something nice! S'pose I'll have other things to think about... Thanks for the clip though.

  • Thanks for posting! Not easy to get beer in Mauritania, but there is said to be a 'chinese restaurant' as you come in to Nouadhibou which serves beer (at a price) but it is really a brothel. Your profile says you live in Nouakchott so you should be able to use local knowledge!!

  • Haha!! Just a silly Romantic whim for being a Moorish pirate - but I'm still going. Not to visit pimps and victims of prostitution, though - of which I've seen enough of... even in parts of Morocco.

Great advice for me and my fellows. Thanks.

    Thank you.

  • You'll have a great adventure. And lots of mint tea!

  • Nouadhibou

    oh...........thanks

  • don't forget the border custom post of bir gendouz shut at 18h00 pm and after you have to wait 7h00 am for crossing the borderline.

the best is sleeping to the oil station of dakhmar or sleeping at custom, they opened a restaurant.

  • Thanks for the tips - I was actually a tad worried about taking booze over the border.

  • i know this chinese restaurant in nouadhibou there is a lot on boulevard madian, the harbour and le cansado beach at the end of the town.cordialement françois.

  • you want drink beer in mauretania?

    it's expensive and no quality.

the best:you stop at marjane supermarket in agadir and you take a lot of bottles alcohol and beer.if you continue on senegal there 's good beer in st-louis,but mauretania no interest for the feast.
