YNN (formerly R News) reports on first-year students and their families moving in for the start of another school year at Rochester Institute of Technology.
It's the day thousands of teens have been waiting for all summer: freshmen move in day at RIT.
"For me it's better than my birthday," says Justin Knysz. And he's not even a freshman, he's a senior student orientation coordinator. "We were cheering and clapping this morning," says Knysz. "We've been up since like 2 a.m."
More than 150 student organizers helped freshmen settle into their new homes. From unpacking to stocking up at orientation, freshmen we spoke with had a little bit of the first day jitters.
"I'm a little nervous about the classes," says freshman Mike Hudson. "It's a big campus."
"I'm not so much nervous as I'm excited though," says freshman Nicholas Line. "It's mostly about the schoolwork that I'm nervous."
"It's definitely different because you're more independent," says freshman Ellesha Fortuna. "That'll be a big change."
52 percent of freshman students came from outside New York State, like Fortuna, who made the drive from Burlington, Ontario.
In all more than 2,600 freshmen piled onto campus Sunday. That's a higher enrollment number than last year. "The experience is pretty overwhelming, just looking around and seeing all the people and stuff," says Fortuna. "It's definitely overwhelming and emotional but it's good. It's a good experience."
An experience that will start with "WOW," that's "Week of Welcome" to help newbies get acquainted with college life.
