After spending a week in the Amazones region, mostly in the region's mountain capital of Chachapoyas, Kristina and I headed west, to Chiclayo and then on to the end of the road, a city called Paita. At the end of the Bogart/Bacall movie "Dark Passage" Bogie ends up in Paita after escaping from Alcatraz. None of the movie, other than the last scene, takes place in Paita and that scene was undoubtedly filmed in California. But we looked at the map and Paita was real and at the end of the road and that seemed like reason enough to go there. As well, we became fascinated by the Sechura desert, a mostly blank spot on the map. As you can see in this video, it is blank for a reason. It is the most desolate place I have ever been and the film doesn't even do that justice.
