Why was a 14 y.o. in charge of a 4 y.o.? Just moving into a new area, Hazel O'Neal should've thought better of sending 2 littles girls out on their own. But I digress. Funny how the whites were opposed to Blacks moving into the town because crime would go up, but the crime rate increased BECAUSE of the criminal, savage WHITES!
I agree that the timing was off. Why invite Blacks into a economically declining town? The mayor should've waited for the economy to improve. Wonder how things are 2day.
Its crazy watching this now as thinking of Dubuque now, racism is more often ignorance and we talk about this all the time at school. I went to Fulton Elementary School with only one other white girl in the class. Times have definitely changed! Lol. Racism still exists here but its a lot less then it used to be.
As a teen going to Senior when crosses were being burned on the grass outside, I just want people to know most of us thought Bill McDermott and his friends were total jackasses. Dr. Greer was correct when he said that the racism was based less on hate than on lack of exposure. Driving down the streets of Dubuque today, you will see many people of all colors. It is still largely a white community, but comparing it now to what it was then, the difference is dramatic.
I went to Irving during those years. That's crazy. I never knew 20/20 did a special on this. Dr. Greer was an awesome principal. Fuck all you racist pricks.
