what would you say to someone with ddd who was a dancer and dancing at the time the pain first came on? i asked my doctor and physio for 6 months for an mri and was continnually refused then the physiotherapist pressed on my back at L5/S1 where i have a degenerate disc and a disc prolapse and after she did that i could barely walk. even though i was persistent the mri didnt come until after that- however a consultant as confirmed already that my condition was worsened by that action. I have degenerative Disc's, my S1-L5 had Microdisectomey that did not help, actually made my pain worse. L5-L4 is also affected but will not let them touch me again. I know this is not a disease, it is my fault for not bending/lifting correctly. Did break my tail bone by being throne down the basement steps because of physical abuse by my father & always felt pain. Then I noticed my lower back at hip area began to cause even more pain. Dr offered Discectomey and it made things worse. Now what?

@stephanielowes I am 55 and I have DDD. When I was in high school I studied ballet for five years. Many retired dancers have arthritis issues. Doing extreme types of exercise can have serious consequences as we age. Our bodies were not designed to withstand the repetitive harsh treatment some activity require. Our body parts wear out with use. Make sure you drink lots of water because the discs need to be hydrated. Best of luck to you!

@Motherboard46 Sounds like you are on the right track. Watch the treadmill & build slowly. High impact exercises can be risky, particularly when first starting out. Your history sounds very similar. Get rid of the cane ASAP, it's a crutch (literally & figuratively). I used one too. However, once rid of it? I never looked back! The bike is a great idea. Recumbent bikes are best, you can go much longer without stressing the back. Tai Chi yes, spinning maybe eventually but risky. Good luck!
Im was 23 when diagnosed with DDD but thats cause of my time in the service. i wanna go on this second deployment but just last week for the first time i bent down to change my daughters close and felt this sharp pain then even weaken my knee as if someone hit me in the back of my knee. Now its been happening all week and im away from my doctor . Idk what to do, Im in so much pain , its rediculous

@georger6565 I'm NOT a medical doctor, my doctoral studies focused on the age-progressive phenomena affecting the spine and SI joint. If you're having pain behind your knee(s)? Get to a doctor at once! At the very least, you may have an inflammation adjacent to a nerve root. If it's more serious, it could mean a herniated IVD. I wouldn't hesitate to have that checked, if only for your peace of mind, not to mention some immediate, SHORT-TERM relief may be prescribed, if necessary. Best wishes!

I was diagnosed with DDD about two years ago....I'm only 28 years old, so this is NOT a disorder that is brought on simply from aging. I was not overweight at the time of diagnosis, but now I'm about 50 lbs overweight, and started gaining after a series of painful epidural injections; (gaining 26lbs in the first 28 days) of course, weight only worsens my condition. I stopped the injections, so, tell me what is next, I would be glad to hear another suggestion other than pain medication......

@SkittlesandBitts I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. YouTube just notified me, after 5 months! First, I'm not an MD. My doctoral studies focused on age-progressive phenomena affecting the spine & sacroiliac...(primary focus: osteology) physical anthropology. 14 spine operations provide an added perspective. The weight is a major factor. Proper nutrition & dehydration may also contribute to DDD. Get active & develop the core musculature at once! Injections never helped me either. JZ
