i had this problem w/my old AE max. it was the MAFS, not the IACV. i first swapped the IACV, and it was unnecessary.

The IAC vavles on these cars have a habit of shorting out and frying the driver in the ECU... if the car will only idle when u throttle it a bit, it is most likely the IAC valve, u can try n clean the throttle plate, but with most cars today the IAC will compensate for a dirty throttle valve.

Ok, replaced the MAF and cleaned the IDLE, MAF rather cheap so replaced it The IDLE is about $158.00 (MAF was $60.00) . At this point car is running well, but engine light is on and the idle drops but still picks back up. From what I'm reading Nissan still need to program the chip. The MAF has made a difference. The care runs great, but engine light. Engine light ? get back with you!

Any advice for me? I have an 01 maxima and after 1rst gear the car seemed to drop the rpms for a second and then catch on again. Another thing i noticed is that when its in park or nuetral it works fine but then when u accelerate it the rpms go up and down between 1,000 & 1,500 rpms. I changed an O2 sensor that came up on the scanner after the CHECK ENGINE light came on as well as the IACV. Its still giving me problems. Any advice? and i see u got a new ECU. How much wud that cost me?

My Maxima was doing that thing too: Start and die, Idle under 500 rpms, need to keep pushing the gas to keep her on.
The solution: Remove and make a deep clean in the IACV (it was dirty as hell!) also make the coolant bypass, make the ECU reset (Disconnect battery and wait all night) and that's all. No problems since that!
This is exactly what my 2001 is doing. Car died on my about 50 miles away from home. Had it towed to a Dobbs ( I know but was under pressure) and they replaced oxygen sensor. The car is now running but at start up does exactly what this car is doing. Needs to be revved to get it going. I'm going with the IVAC first. Google it there is a guy that gives instructions. Let you know how it turns out.

yea I managed to get it all fixed...thanks everyone, I managed to come by a new IACV, and had the dealer properly program everything...I also had a new ECU put in as well

Is this a common problem for most 2001 Maxima's? I'm looking at buying one but not if it keeps cutting off. Or was it because you modified the engine in more ways than one and the car wasn't used to it? Btw, your car sounds nice.

well I wouldn't call it a common issue, BUT it is well known. Its a very good car however, minus the minor stupid issues that randomly happen lol. I didn't do much modification to my engine. I had always figured I had a problem with the throttle body for quite a while BEFORE it went up, I just neglected it, so it was my fault. THANKS FOR THE COMPLIMENT
