My daughter produced this video as an assignment for a college video-journalism class. I probably failed to adequately explain to her that Sufism, while an aspect of Islam, is not synonymous with Islam itself. The dhikr service she filmed is not something one would find at a typical mosque. She does, however, capture the reality that mainstream Islam is moderate and non-threatening.

I enjoyed her willingness to share the personal, to show us what it's like for an American kid to discover that her dad is on an unlikely spiritual path. I also like the way she juxtaposes the personal/family with the political/sociological.

  • Though it is slightly misleading to infer that sufism is in itself a seperate religion-sufism merely constitutes the inner dimnesion of islamic worship-termed ihsan in the literature. tassawuf/sufism has always been a rudiment of islamic practice. Though there are some dubious sufi's let us not through out the baby with the bathwater

    Very beautiful sir...

  • Sufism is the inner part of the path. For many, Sufism is a doorway into Islam, as it was for me. For others, it's a way to bring one's heart to the teachings he or she was raised in by learning the deeper meaning of the pillars. So many people approach religion dogmatically. Approached that way, it's easy to get lost. Sufism is about coming to know God by opening one's heart and receiving His blessings. It's a path of tasting.

  • its either sufi or muslim, why do some muslims call themselves sufi? are they not happy enough with being a muslim? adding things to Islam that never was there?

  • @ThePakistanipoprocks Salfi's claim to follow the salf (pious generations) sufi's claim to follow the ascetics through purification if merly having a name makes you a sect then everyone belongs to a sect what you do must be able to be found in Quran and the Sunnah ! if you ignore your history then you are guilty of the gravest ignorance

  • Mashallah...

  • Sufiism is not a religion. The religion is Islam, Sufiism is a sect.

  • Sufism is something like Kabalah. Very interesting. It satisfies my doubts and made my faith(iman) stronger than just accepting a religion blindly without truth or logic thus you'll end up having a BIG "QUESTION MARK" with unsatisfied answers people give you.

God had shown your father the path to the truth. A path of a Seeker. To seek God. This is also defined in Christian Gnosticism and Jewish Kabalah.

Islam is nothing but to submit yourself to God. Be aware that All is from God.

  • your most wellcome brother!!!!
