Very interesting! But Us Navy must be really expensive, probably plenty of money (dollars), and for what? having nuclear submarines.

My father was born in Mobile Alabama. He was a Sailor from 14 years old till the day he died at age 57. He's burried in Boluxi Mississippi. I want to visit this great battleship in Alabama the next time I go visit my Fathers grave. My Grand Parents saved a place for me when I die in their Boluxi resting place. Thank You.

@iowa61 sorry but all battleships were obsolete before ww2 started . the day of the carrier was here but the people in charge did not realise this until later in war Battle ships are visible by satellite today but stealth submarines lie on bottom of sea for years until needed and planes are now becoming obsolete. IF you loose a plane you loose its pilot but a Drone . star wars is just around corner alabama is obsolete

@iowa61 I agree, just too bad DOD,doesn't see it that way.

@deb1926 Our "decline" has been declared prematurely... The battlewagons are amazing pieces of naval architecture. But cost is an issue. The Alabama's bigger, younger cousins, the IOWAs are still viable platforms. But they do require a lot of manpower and the Navy has shifted away from oil-fired steam turbine powerplants. My personal opinion is they still have a place in the active naval force mix. And A LOT of real experts agree with me. Not enough though...

@iowa61 true she is a beast ,no reason such a powerhouse sits akimbo for tours, state of our decline as a world power.

ALABAMA was decomissioned in 1947, not 1944. And she was far from obsolete. The most successful of the treaty-class battlewagons. A lot of fight in that ship to this day.

Sorry to hear that, join the crowd... my husband is laid off right now too. But I hope you have a good Christmas regardless and you get your job back soon.
Thanks for watching.:)

It has been along time since I have been their, but I am going back someday. It brings chills down my spine when I cross the Mobile Bay and look to my right on I10 and see it. Everytime I go to Gulf Shores I see it. I am proud of that part of history. Thanks to our vets.
