Tsar Ivan IV (Ivan Grozny - Ivan The Terrible) reigned from 1533 - 1584.
The epithet "Ivan the Terrible" is inaccurate. The Russian word "Grozny" translates differently...more along the lines of "Fear-Inspiring" or "Severe".

He is famous for the many cruel acts associated with him including the murder of his son and heir (also called Ivan).
Ivan IV became the first Russian ruler to be called the Tsar of All Russia.

There is much attention given to King Henry VIII of England and his six wives. I think that many people do not know that across Europe there was a Monarch who was just as, in fact, MORE notorious than King Henry.

Ivan had eight wives and all of them met a tragic end to varying degrees.

So this is a brief overview. I myself have studied English and French monarchy extensively and I hope that perhaps this video will encourage history enthusiasts to look into the Russian Monarchy - which is full of intrigue, treason, betrayals, love affairs, plots, villains, heroes, damsels in distress and all the other things that make history interesting!

Thanks!

  • Very interesting.I am british. I have studied alot about henry the eightth but less about Ivan the terrible. thank for the information.

  • @MyAhsun thanks for your comment )) yep everyone knows of henry the 8th..I am fascinated by British/English history but I think it would be cool if we expanded everyone's horizons in terms of history :D There are so many intriguing stories and lives that haven't been touched upon in popular media. Take care :)))) <3

  • He sure was a terrible man. Why would so many woman even marry him?

  • @carefulcarpenter I'm guessing because he was King (Tsar). Also, in those times women basically had to do what their families told them to do and ambitious families were always trying to use their daughters for further advancement. By the way, thanks for commenting - you're the first comment on the vid!:)) Cheers! =)

  • You notice that Ivan IV actually respect the wives that treated him well, but reacted terribly at their deaths. Yet he dispensed the wives who cheated on him or could not bear children for him.

I'm not saying what Ivan IV did was right, but inside he valued the same things any good man would in a wife.

  • @Nicollie1062 Then it seems he was not the only "terrible person"?? The aspiring families were also terrible.
