STORY:

This painting, called 'Portrait of Major George Maule' by 18th century German artist Johann Zoffany is one of the highlights of the London Sotheby's auction.

But this Versace collection painting, expected to fetch 3 to 4 million U.S. dollars, could be stolen property.

A direct descendent of the person depicted in the portrait contacted the Art Loss Register, which tracks lost and stolen art and antiquities after seeing it for auction.

As proof of ownership, the family sent a photograph of the portrait hanging above their home's mantle-piece before it vanished.

The painting is now withdrawn from the sale with the full agreement of Sotheby's consignor.
