Film Description: The true story of prominent mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr. is the subject of this biographical drama from director Ron Howard. Russell Crowe stars as the brilliant but arrogant and conceited professor Nash. The prof seems guaranteed a rosy future in the early '50s after he marries beautiful student Alicia (Jennifer Connelly) and makes a remarkable advancement in the foundations of "game theory," which carries him to the brink of international acclaim. Soon after, John is visited by Agent William Parcher (Ed Harris), from the CIA, who wants to recruit him for code-breaking activities. But evidence suggests that Nash's perceptions of reality are cloudy at best; he is struggling to maintain his tenuous hold on sanity, and Alicia suspects a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. Battling decades of illness with the loyal Alicia by his side, Nash is ultimately able to gain some control over his mental state, and eventually goes on to triumphantly win the Nobel Prize. Based loosely on the book of the same name by Sylvia Nasar, A Beautiful Mind (2001) co-stars Paul Bettany, Adam Goldberg, Anthony Rapp, Christopher Plummer, and Judd Hirsch.

What if only blond was present there? Wouldn't the best result have come if everyone strove for himself ignoring the group? Because in that case one person would've achieved the target - instead of all failing by ignoring her. So, his argument is only applicable when there are alternative choices - four other girls in this case.

BTW, they will "block" each other only if they are similar in capability. What if one of them is way better than others? He would be the blond's instant choice!

I think you're missing the point. You're right to an extent, but Nash Equilibrium Theory extends far beyond this simple and somewhat contrived example. This scene was simply used in the film to give a rough idea of a far more complex theory (if it was that simple, he wouldn't have won the Nobel Prize in Economics would he?!), and it serves that purpose well. The fact that there are a couple of trivial flaws with the example is irrelevant.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't his theory saying that the optimal strategy is not necessarily for every guy to just compete for the blond girl and assume that results in the "best outcome?"

You're right, a blond could strongly prefer one of the guys. But it doesn't change the fact that the other girls will be miffed by the fact that the three lesser qualified guys went for the blond. So in the end it wouldn't have been an optimal strategy for three of the guys.

what does "better" mean? more "game"? it's irrelevant, he who comes to realize that, will truly win.
