I went to Japan through YFU on the summer of 2008 and here are some suggestions or some things to expect if you want to study abroad and homestay in Japan as well. :) I've also been to Japan two other times and have had many Japanese exchange brothers and sisters who lived with my family as well, so I at least know a little something of what I'm talking about. XD
HEY!!! did you have to pay for your plane ticket?

Im pretty sure the student meant ”かわいい” not ”こわい”。
Im Japanese and currently study in the U.S. and I noticed many English speakers who study Japanese tend to confuse the sound of こわい and かわいい. even Japanese teacher in my university sometimes confuse.Besides,I guess middle school or high school students in Japan dont use that word こわい. they would use こえー instead coz they believe it sounds cooler. so dont be mad! you are かわいい;)

My host mother was more than happy to do my laundry. I felt kinda embarrassed, especially as I'm a chubby dude and wore the biggest clothes of anyone there. XD
