Tightening the guard screws to factory specified torque settings on a bolt action rifle is critical to ensure shot to shot consistency. This setting, usually around sixty inch pounds, ensures the critical portions of the action are seated firmly in the stock's bedding points. In this video Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, demonstrates how to properly torque the guard screws on a bolt action using the Wheeler Engineering Firearms Accurizing Tool, also referred to as the FAT wrench.

  • but my action is held on by one screw in between the forend of the stock and the front of the magazine well its one screw strait into a bit of metal with a thread whitch is dovetailed to the bottem of the barrel

  • He said "TANG"

  • like he ever misses

  • that's one nifty screwdriver

  • totally!!!!!! i never noticed!!

  • Did he just undertorque those screws? Hard to tell on the video but, I didn't really see the screw turn before the torque screwdriver "popped". It's important that the screw actually be rotating when that happens becasue sliding friction is less than static friction. It's a common error (and one that "experts" that do it refuse to accept) when they do it wrong by going back and "torquing down" a screw or bolt or nut after it's been tightened down some. Besides that, these videos are very nice.
