This is a trailer preview for "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" (Smooth Talk). Had to make it for a project, I didn't choose the weird movie. By Joe D.

  • I think she goes with him not because of her family at all, but because she's enticed by Arnold Friend and she's helpless against him. She's immature and while she pretends to be sexually mature, this just shows just how innocent and helpless she actually is.

  • to bad its all a dream....

  • I wrote a paper once on the short story, its cool to see films inspired by short story pieces instead of long novels like Harry Potter or Atlas Shrugged. I saw recent film screened at Sundance called The Lie that pulls from a short story in The New Yorker. It was an exceptional film as well and I feel as if its up to par with Smooth Talk for sure. • In class we had to read this story and evaluate it. Our group came up with the idea that Arnold Friend is all of Connie's tempations except with a realistic twist to it.

  • The movie suggests Connie was "smooth talked" into going with this creepy guy...as all virgins eventually are...therein lies the theme. The movie suggests she willingly went w Friend, after he tells her how he'll "hold her so tight". This might be one of the most feminist movies I've seen.

  • @lezeloser : It depends on how you want to look at it. That's what's great about literature, it can be taken in so many different ways. And I think people would see it as she is sacrificing herself, because she wants to be looked at as someone who tried, her mom was always downing her and comparing her to her sister, June.

  • She didn't leave to save her family. Why would she, she was the outkast in the family

  • in the stroy arnold friend was the symbol of the devil

  • We just read this, and she goes with him partly to keep her family safe and because she is so scared of what is going on she has no thought to fight him back and try to get away.

  • @LoneBaldEagle No she did! cause he threatened her by her family! so she felt frightened and went unwillingly with him :(
