The following are pictures and videos I shot during the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, held at the State College Classic at Kocher Farm on Friday, June 26, 2009. The horses and riders were elegantly turned out. My favorite pair was, without a doubt, Lydia Todd and her coloured Irish Sport Horse, Picasso. I filmed both of their rounds so you'd have an opportunity to see the courses (I wanted to focus on the photography end of it so I'd have time to socialize with some old friends I'd not seen in a long, long time.). Todd came in sixth place overall. The winner of the first round was Mike Kocher on Roar With Laughter, and the overall winner was Abby O'Mara on Walkaway.

  • You still have Duncan right? I've noticed more and more footage about Clue, I'm glad she's back in your hands where she belongs. I do love watching your progress with Duncan thou, he's one of a kind.

  • Oh my God, yes I do! I have no plans of selling my boy! :) I've just not had much opportunity to make videos lately. I put together that progression video of Clue over a series of weeks--I have one started of Dunc, but it's not finished yet.

  • This was gorgous! this is what i've been wanting to do but i don't have the horses necessary :( by the way on almost every horse, it appears that you have two reins. So what kind of bit(s) are you riding in? just wondering, and good luck with all your amazing horses!

  • None of the horses in this video are mine, but they were all beautiful. I have ridden my gelding, Duncan, in a pelham here and there (with a French link mouth)--that has two reins, but I only have used it sporadically.

  • that is so funny that they get off and walk their horse over a log! i have never seen that in the videos i have watched. do they always do that?

  • I believe there are a variety of possible "tests" they may have to do. I think another is opening/closing a gate.

  • Here's the trrick. U can convert this clip to an audio mp3 file at a website called ezmp3grab daht cahm. (This wouldnt post here unless I misspelled daht cahm).

  • I love Irish Sport Horses. I have one, and shes really good. Figity with her face. But good. Beautiful pictures/videos.

  • Tjhat is so cool. I hope to do that some day :)

  • It's called a Shadbelly. I also thought it was someone jumping in a dressage coat the first time I saw one ;)

Women wear a Shadbelly in hunter classics (back in the day before you had to have an approved helmet they used to wear top hats) and if men want they can wear a red jacket. I did see a guy showing in a Shadbelly once but whoever sold it to him was playing a mean joke because they are for women.

  • Lovely, the music, horses, and quality of production. MORE!!

  • shad-bellies
