A couple of friends showing the results of using a suppressor (not a "silencer," since it does not make the shot silent). The first guy had a full-auto M-16 (legally, of course) and shows the sound difference between using a suppressor and not. The second guy had a suppressed .308 and he shot regular (super sonic) ammo first, then 3 rounds of sub-sonic ammo. As you can tell, with sub-sonic ammo, a suppressor is almost a "silencer," but not quite.
