well, I've been called this by a Baiano and a Paulista. i don't think either person was from a favela, though i can't say for sure.
on both occasions i didn't feel the word was used in a threatening way, but it was definitely used because i was white (and still am...). and i'm american just to clarify, so that's why the alemao thing strikes me as funny.

well, they also use the word "Alemão" as slang when talking about white people in general...probably translates to anyone in a position of "power" or privilege.
