Adelaide is a generation behind the rest of the nation, according to property developer Sam Sgherza.
The Sam Sgherza Group is spearheading the stalled Goodwood Road shopping precinct proposal as well as several successful apartment developments.
Mr Sgherza said the state was lagging behind the rest of the country for new ideas and leadership in development.
He said the state needed to become vibrant and exciting like "Melbourne or Perth" in using community consultation to overcome conflict.
"Town seems to be closed at 5pm. If they extend the trading hours and get a few more people out it might create a bit of nightlife," Mr Sgherza said.
He said the current Government's long-term development plan, including such major projects as the Adelaide Oval, new Royal Adelaide Hospital and possibly a new Casino, would bring more work and new life to the CBD.
He said Adelaide needed to embrace its strengths and increase its population growth.
"I think we have to let go a bit and think of the greater Adelaide rather than just the individual.
"I think too many minorities seem to overpower the bigger picture and if we can get over that hurdle everyone will be happy."
