Regiments have different marching tempos. It cab go from 108 to 140 beats per minute. It has nothing to do with walking better. It has to do with tradition.

Arnhem from A. E. Kelly :D I like that march! Great stuff! But I think it's a little bit to slow played by the band. They should play it quicker. I've got a record from this piece played by the dutch marines band, on that record the march is played a lot quicker. I think the band is playing it slower so they can walk better on it.
