Laverie Vallee, known better as Charmion, was a Sacramento born trapeze artist who possessed strength and a physique most men would be envious of. However, she was most well known for her risqué striptease performances. The act was incredibly impressive and provocative for the era. One of her greatest fans was Thomas Edison. As a result of that adoration, on November 11, 1901 Charmion committed a simplified version of her act to film for Edison.

Charmion eventually retired to Santa Ana, California. She passed away on February 6, 1949 at the age of 73.

  • Personally, I adore the reactions of the two fellows in the box.

  • The two jokers in the balcony remind me of those two old guys on the Muppet Show!

  • Shrug. Standards of beauty were different in 1902 than they are today.

  • @damitajo12000 True. And I think we'd all be better for it (simply because people take things WAY too seriously).

  • @TheZacula Well, 100 years from now, a tiny nipple exposure at the Superbowl might not mean the end of humanity.

  • @brnleague99 Yeah - they didn't exclude 90 percent of women from the category "beauty." Today, it's all about being a waif with fake hair color, make up, etc.

  • Thomas Edison was the first schmoetog.

  • the men in the balcony were plants to get everyone else in the mood

  • I cannot help but wonder.... if those old guys in the balcony were so bloody excited by THIS (though I must say, a trapeze act in a dress is actually pretty impressive), then they would either go completely bananas or have a heart attack at modern strip shows. Considering that regular trapeze artists wear less than she eventually got down to.

That said, I do love the old guys. So very very much like the hecklers of the Muppet Show.

  • The dude on the left put the corset in his jacket! XD

  • How funny is that. It's year 1901 and she does the same things on the trapeze that are still done today.

  • those guys in the corner are HILARIOUS.

"oh!! OHHHH MY GOD I can totally see her bloomers--oh she's TAKING IT OFF, SHE'S TAKING IT OFF OH MY GOD LOOK OH MY GOD"

    love this vid!

  • I love the guys on the left who're just going absolutely nuts for the entire show. I think they're almost more entertaining than the striptease :P
