- "They all died in the fire I started".
This is a very special video to me. The reason is, I always had ideas about the concept you'll find here - but I never thought I could really put them in a video.
And so... here you'll find Lucius, Narcissa, Bellatrix, Rodolphus and Severus (and a bit of their colleagues too).
The song is not casual. I think it fits the concept very well indeed. Putting it simple, the young Purebloods surely had "high hopes" and so this is an introduction to their story as I see it.
I would be sooooo glad if you told me that you understood the video simply by itself, since I really tried to make it suggestive and clear. Anyway, here are some explanations just in case you need them:
the video is from Lucius' pov. Now, after all those years, he has survived his friends and wife, and I imagined him in his last years, coming to an imaginary cemetery (I hope they were at least buried XD) and remembering about them.
He doesn't care about Voldemort - actually, he considers him as the "division bell". Even Rowling said it, showing how Lucius and Narcissa cared for their son more than anything else. So why can't it be the same for other characters?
I have my ideas about the relationships existing between the older Deatheaters: I liked to think that Rodo and Bella shared some kind on love even though her obsession with Voldemort; I thought Narcissa as a young girl was sweet, unspoiled, and deeply in love with her husband; I thought that even Severus, maybe, as a student and a young boy could have loved those friends. Maybe it's not completely canon but we don't have all that informations about canon, do we?
So I put in the video Hogwarts ("the place we lived when we were young") and their lives there; "leaving the myriad small creatures try to tie us to the ground to a world consumed by slow decay" is a very strong line and I thought it fits Severus in his not-so-pleasant years at Hogwarts.
The moments of their youth in the ancient Pureblood mansions ("the grass was greener", etc). I have to say that, in Rodo's part, the female hand and the corrupted rose symbolize Bella - his memories of her; Narcissa's part is "with friends surrounded" because I think she's the most sensitive, and the one who, in that time, had already understood - friendship is more important than ambition and revenge.
And then Severus' love for Lily (random red haired girl xD), Lucius and Narcissa's wedding, Draco's birth, the Lestranges difficult relationship. I thinks this part of the song is about lost opportunities and the occasions we rejected - the "bridges" (to other possibilities?) we set on fire. So Sev's lost occasion with Lily, the Malfoy's lost occasion to be happy forever after and...
"steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again, driven by the force of some inner tide" - don't you have that sensation when you try to forget something, to stop a wrong habit, but you just can't help "sleepwalking back again"? To me it was perfect to portray how Bella and Rodo ruined their lives: they just couldn't fight the tide.
Then the famous words about those Deatheaters who were taken before and after Voldemort's fall: no extraordinary cast here, I just wanted to show how suddenly and merciless they all saw their lives changed forever. ù.ù (I just would like to say that I dont' know who Dolohov is. Found him somewhere. He seemed fitting Rowling's description.)
About Bella and Rodo, as you can see I didn't potray their trial but their arrest using Sirius's brusque words about them, Rabastan and Barty. You know, just... sudden, painful and brief. I imagined Rodolphus running to help his wife as they both fought against Aurors.
The passage of those fourteen following years is symbolized by Narcissa's priceless expression of sadness and fear.
And obviously Lucius is still encumbered by desire and ambition, even connecting this desire with his son - Draco here appears only through the relationship with his parents. Severus clearly can't forget Lily, and the Lestranges are just waiting, eyes to the horizon.
"Grass was greener" starts again and this time I wanted to show how different their lives now are, so a lot of anger-pain-fear, Voldemort-war-death; almost totally HP here, though I added a mad Rodolphus (you know, fourteen years in Azkaban...) and Narcissa's feelings of regret and humiliation in front of the society, after Lucius' failings (so that's why I mixed Moulin Rouge with Fudge XD). In the end I tried to represent the Malfoys fighting for their son (there's also Voldemort stealing the wand! XD), and obviously Severus and Bella's deaths. The very very end is a collage of those memories directly from Lucius' mind.
Song is High Hopes by Pink Floyd.
Enjoy. :)

This is a stunning and haunting portrayal of the Death Eaters. I loved the inclusion of Kevin Spacey and Gabriel Byrne...
Eight thousand and one thanks for this video!

Thank you so much! *O*
(I like a lot both actors - they were fitting for that part of the video, don't you think? :P)

You are one talented storyteller. Or video maker, or whatever you could name this. But it's incredible, beautiful and so well chosen music, let alone the clips used.

Thank you, really. I like the word "storyteller". It's an honour for me.

i love it, wonderfully done. And the song is perfect for this vid.
The deatheaters were humans after all, and you showed it in this vid, they were young, stupid and full of false hopes, but they were not pure evil. It was a trap for them with no turning back. I agree with You, JKR showed it from the good and perfect Potter point of view, but nothing is that simple. They were not that simple.
Again, absolutely love it

Thank you so much (for subscribing also)! Sometimes it can be really hard to explain how people can be twisted, sorrowful or even bad without that meaning they're "simply" evil: you're right, nothing is that simple. And since it isn't simple I'm particularly happy I was able to express it with my vid!
Also for the song... it was perfect in my opinion and it's good to see it's the same for you.
