Verdi, Otello, act I, Otello-Desdemona, Giovanni Martinelli-Elisabeth Rethberg. Chorus & Orchestra Metropolitan Opera, New York, dir Ettore Panizza, enr 12-02-1938.
He is perfect. The character is there in the phrasing and colour of his voice. His voice is extremely expressive, both heroic and plangent. Brilliant tenor. For me, he owns this role, no question. There may be tenors with glorious voices who have sung this, but none, that I have heard, both live and in recordings have made it sound like it is being sung/said for the first time.
Any idea how this was recorded? He has much squillo for sure, but I'd like to know if we are getting the full spectrum of overtones on this. His interpretation is moving.
