Archos presents the worlds first embeded Youtube HD set-top-box streamer product by just using the Archos 5 Internet Tablet, with full smooth 1280x720 at 2mbit/s playback of Youtube HD videos, by just clicking on the embedded videos or browsing through all the Youtube videos at http://m.youtube.com

Waiting for Flash support in Android is not even required for this to work.

With better and possibly full MKV 720p H264 high profile support to come in optimized firmware updates, Archos is effectively about to become a pocket-sized replacement for Blu-ray.

  • a) this assumes the wireless internet available is fast enough to stream HD 720p

    b) Bluray players exist because they play bluray discs in 1080p with 5+.1 surround and stunning colour, not to play youtube videos in 720p

  • Usually people have 2mbit/s Internet available and that streams fine to the Archos 5 Internet Tablet over the wifi hotspot.

Sure 1080p is better, but 1080p kind of requires 2x more bitrate to stream, fewer people have stable 4mbit/s bitrates available to them over their ADSL or Cable connections. Though for 1080p you'd need next years ARM Cortex A9 processors anyways.

I think 720p is ample enough for Internet streamed HD quality, even Youtube's 720p looks great on a big HDTV.

  • Although it's still being tested and Archos is still optimizing bitrate support, potentially Archos can play all the MKV 720p tv shows and movies that people can find on the Internet (legally or not). Most MKV HD files people download are 720p and not 1080p. So that would be good enough for that. And what I think is 2mbit/s to 4mbit/s streaming DivX, On2 or H264 video from the Internet would be ample enough for all on-demand HD video that people would want to have, if Youtube can licence it all

  • Regardless, you said it replace a bluray player, when a bluray player is surround sound with much better colour and 1080p, even if the internet connection is there for youtube 720p.

  • H264 streamed from the Internet on the Archos in 1280x720 can have just as good colors and surround sound.

  • 3.5mbit/s 1280x720 H264 video-on-demand using Archos with or without surround sound is a better experience than buying or renting a Blu-ray player and Blu-ray discs.

  • Good video man. Can u watch veoh on the archos

  • can you play 1080p? i would like to play my HD music videos on the go. i have them on 720p and 1080p... so would the 1080p work?

  • Any chance it has java and flash enabled?I would like to take it around the house and play pogo games on it.

  • Bluray players have gone far below 500 dollars now, and the Archos costs a lot more than £250 depending on capacity.

I have an Archos 5 IT, but it's buggy as hell and until the most recent update crashed whenever you had more than two tabs and a song running... You don't get those problems with a bluray player, and legally sourcing bluray quality footage is nigh on impossible without buying the bluray.

  • @TSSdrifting $250 is much better for a 4.8in. touchscreen mp3/4 player then 500 for a blueray player

  • The Archos 5 is awesome for watching HD videos :p
