@plumsink "No single disaster can stop the space program once we have the Dragon and the Orion and their launch systems and the Russians and others all running separately at the same time."
The Shuttle was an amazing machine in many respects, extremely versatile. What it wasn't was what it was designed to be: safe and cheap. We are entering a much better era now: multiple launch systems, multiple spacecraft. No single disaster can stop the space program once we have the Dragon and the Orion and their launch systems and the Russians and others all running separately at the same time.
Agreed, we need a revitalization of our long term goals in space. Instead of arguing where the shuttles should be mothballed, they should be getting ready for future missions while we prepare for the next step beyond our planet.
In the past two decades, we've had the Dotcom Bubble, The Real Estate Bubble. Maybe its time to have a space industry bubble. With the USA leading the way.
Cronkite repeats a fantastic point made by James Webb - the most lucrative spinoff of the space program was in systems engineering, without which the computer revolution would have been impossible. Every aspect of modern electronics can be traced back to the systems development techniques developed to cope with the multiple interlocking technical tasks of Apollo. This in fact is the best reason for the Space Shuttle - develop techniques necessary for keeping up an ongoing interplanetary program.

We can only hope that will be the case.
