Trumpeter swans are much larger than any other species of waterfowl.
Adult trumpeters will average about 30 pounds and have a seven foot wing span.
Young swans, called cygnets, are easy to identify, because they're gray, not white, until they're a year old.
Hunting in the 1800s drove trumpeter swans to the brink of extinction. Restoration efforts in the upper Midwest have led to increased sightings of swans in Missouri as they migrate through during fall and winter months. And several trumpeter families have been found wintering in different areas around Missouri. But until people get used to seeing them, waterfowl hunters need to be careful. Shooting a protected trumpeter swan can cost thousands of dollars in fines.

  • I'll never understand why someone would hunt such graceful majestic intelligent social beings. hunting should be forbidden permanently. we are no gods so playing god is not an option. the hunters should shoot themselves or at least be ashamed of themselves. savages. Trumpeter Swans rule!

  • @eskilla

I was just thinking that! I LOVE that book! :)

  • BRING ON THE TRUMPETS

  • @SafcLad2k I know a Trumpeter swan that had one. His name was Louis (and pronounced Louie BTW).

Whoever finds out where Louis came from, I'll give you an imaganary cookie, AND taco.

  • @elassawipo They are called Tundra swans. Trumpeter swans have all black bills and mute swans have yellow bills. MOSWAN

  • I love trumpeter swans, all because of that E.B. White book. I cry every time Louis' dad goes to pay back the music store D=

  • They are so funny! It can be very amusing listening to them, especially at night when they seem to be more active. They all appear to get quiet at once, once in a while, then you will hear one of them start goin and then everyone *else* starts goin! LOL

  • tundra swans have yellow on their bills.

  • @SafcLad2k They switched to oboes LOL

  • My dad and stepmom used to have a house on a lake, where every season the swans would hit the lake and be there for several weeks. I was there several times while the swans were, and when they get to goin they can make a pretty big ruckus! LOL It's funny actually, sometimes! :)
