Stars can't be seen from the moon during the lunar day because the sun is bright and reflects off the ground. Just like when you're in a city and can't see the stars because of all the light pollution.

It's really sad that the space shuttle is no more, but alas, if we're ever gonna get back to the moon, we'll have to go back to capsules. I only wish there was some way to make spaceplanes that could take off from Earth, go to another celestial body, and return, but that would require an astronomically improbable amount of fuel. At least, if you're using rockets to do the job, which, unfortunately, are the only engines powerful enough to break the hold of gravity. At this point, at least.

Well, NASA left one astronaut behind to operate the camera. He returned to earth with the next Apollo flight ;) ;)
-
The camera was setup by the astronauts before they left.
-
It also has to do with the exposure of the film.

There is a documentary I saw once where they are interviewing the person who was in Houston that was running that camera and he said he timed it almost perfectly to start panning up in anticipation of the launch.
