A little late comment here, (yes just catching up to D3 info now after a years pretending that I don't care), Since D3 seems more like a MMO, it would stand to reason that looking at MMOs ways to deal with death, would be a good way to start. I suggest that like in some MMOs you should de-level if you die in an arena match using your hardcore character. Players would still be able to play after loosing an arena match, but might risk not being able to use their gear until they regain the lv.

Have it as something to where if you right-click somebody, there will be options, and one of those options is to form a team against another team of players who they have met. Have the arena and all of the stats recorded to where people can see it on the diablo site.

I think there should be both a hardcore arena in which if a player's character dies, they die permanently; and if a player's character dies, then it won't die permanently. Have those two different options for players to choose from. I understand that it may extend queue time for players, but i don't think the queue time would be very short if player's were willing to risk their character dying permanently anyway-
