On January 22, 2012, the Anderson Job crew had a little 'extra' work to do. The Job: Pick up the rest of the storage cars off the Orr Mill Connection. This is rare mileage due to the Orr Mill Connection never seeing rail service in over a decade! So this was a special treat worth filming and witnessing since the last time I remember seeing a train on this line was when I was little and seeing one of the original PICK Alcos chugging up it solo. Today we see PICK 9504 (Ex. CSX MoW Pumpkin GE U18B) chugging, bouncing, and rocking up the old Orr Mill Connection as they battle wheel slipping, wet rails, and stalls while retrieving these Gons out of storage! Also there's a special 'bonus' footage at the end!
First Scene: TURN YOUR SPEAKERS UP! After stalling out on the hill, PICK 9504 cut away from its train and sanded the track all the way up to the McDuffie St. Crossing (which I'm shooting from). Then after returning back to its train we witness an awesome sight and sound as Heath has PICK 9504 roaring in Notch 8 as they finally get rolling back towards the Gluck Line. (Anderson, SC)
Second Scene: This spot was especially neat. After seeing a photo from 30 years ago of a SCL GP16 crossing this same spot I decided that it would be appropriate to shoot a train 30 years later at the same spot! Here PICK 9504/Anderson Job is seen roaring, and then coasting across South Main Street. Not much has changed since: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2449789 (Anderson, SC)
Third Scene: It's Round 2 and after bringing the first cut of storage cars to the downtown interchange with Norfolk Southern (NS), PICK 9504/Anderson Job has just coupled up to the 2nd and last cut of storage gons, and is seen passing through the graveyard near the end of the remaining Orr Mill Connection. (Anderson, SC)
Fourth Scene: SEATBELTS EVERYONE! THIS IS GONNA BE A ROCKY RIDE! PICK 9504/Anderson Job is seen coming around the corner, up the hill, and through the S-Curve on some less than perfect track in what remains of the old Orr Mill! They are turning back onto the Gluck Line where they will head to the interchange downtown for a second time to drop off the last of the storage gons. (Anderson, SC)
Bonus Scene! PICK 9508/Belton Job heads across the last crossing before it will tie down for the day at the PCA Plant in Honea Path. AWESOME P5 Horn Action! *Note: Mr. Buck giving me a friendly hand salute! (Honea Path, SC)
