The second test of an alternate engine effect for my EVE Online project, rendered with a textured Retribution assault frigate. Provided to you in glorious 1080p!

I am aware the effect lessens as the time goes on. The ship in the video (despite not being able to see it) is actually accelerating, and when it reaches the constant speed the trail goes down quite a bit. In the game the ship actually does flare up during acceleration.

I fixed the issue I had getting a constant white centre. Edited the colours a little as well.

Comments welcome!

Youtube still nuked the quality a bit, unfortunately. Colours are a little washed out.

Engines have always been a problem with this project. Getting an effect that resembled that from the EVE universe, but was still easy and quick to render out (render times are important!). This effect is a test of something that may actually work.

Rendered in 3DS Max, Default Scanline (because it was a test, mainly). Engines done with a post effects plugin.

Textures all sourced from the EVE Online client, along with the Model. The problem is, ofcourse, transferring the texture mapping so it looks as close to the game as possible in the 3D space. I believe I have accomplished this - with a little extra. Due to the software not having to render in real time, I can play with reflections more.

All textures and models property of CCP Games.

  • great work! i like the shader of the ship, but i have to ask, how did you make the engine trail, particle flow?

anyway you did a good job acheiving that effect:)

  • @06vamigre Was actually entirely done in post production with a plugin known as KV Trails. Free plugin, takes some learning to use it though.

  • @arockcalledsteve I tried the plugin, and it suits the engines perfectly!

  • @Overmind5000 Good to hear you like it to!

The first part of the project is going to be out sooner than later. Keep an eye out.

  • This engine trail looks great, of course not exactly as ingame but I think it's better! The fact that it changes over time depending on the speed of the ship is amazing and adds more "life" to the animation than the regular--more continuous-- flow of EVE ship engines. The textures I've seen in your videos look very well and now that I', playing with 3ds max myself I can see how youtube doesnt do justice and how amazing these ships look when redered properly. Keep up the good work!
