Thank God he survived. A couple (man and wife) in Japan recently died in a similar incident - a group of friends all dug a big hole in the beach sand, and the couple stepped in it to dig more, and the walls collapsed on them. Sadly, they suffocated. It's easy to forget about the awesome weight of dirt and sand and your powerlessness to dig yourself out
