Now seriously: who thinks we could have all actually died that night?! Any experts out there who can tell what the chance was of lightning hitting the boat?

And who was the loser screaming "I wanna get lightning! I wanna get lightning!"??? Oh. That would have been me.

I'm no expert but here's what they say: suspend activities when lightning is 6 miles away (30 seconds between lightning and thunder). Of course, that's on land, and since the boat mast is clearly the tallest thing around on water, I'd be extra cautious.
