His first penalty of the night, a monster effort from 49 metres, saw him move above Jonny Wilkinson's previous mark of 1,178 points.

Carter, who ended today's contest with 1,188 points to his name, reached the total eight games quicker than Wilkinson, averaging just over 15 points per Test.

While Carter is renowned for his usually metronomic goal-kicking he has also racked up 29 Test tries and the effortless manner in which he orchestrates the All Blacks' play marks him out as not just one of the stand-out players of his generation, but of any era.

  • @274giantkilla I thought the close game made it more worthwhile. I will also say that I thought France played better than NZ in that game and probably deserved to win - just like Wales probably deserved to beat France in the semi

  • :) Pity we didn't have him in the final... would of got a heap of points.. anywho! #ALLBLACKEVERYTHING
