On August 12th, 2009 the Bahá'í communities of the greater Bay Area held an event entitled "An Evening in Support of the Baha'is of Iran" at the historic Herbst Theater in San Francisco to raise awareness of and generate publicity on the heavy persecution of the Baha'i community in Iran. Over 1000 attendees, including local dignitaries, government officials, members of the press and Bay Area Bahá'ís and their guests, gathered to support the cause of justice for the community of Iranian Baha'is enduring persistent persecution. • Prison Alchemy

By Muhammad Rida Hisami (Imprisoned seven years)

How delightful is the resplendent prison courtyard!

How pleasant the air in this prison world!

How grateful am I at dawn in this secluded corner,

Intoning the prayers and sacred words of God,

Meditating on the Friend after receiving the jailers decree,

Becoming intoxicated by the wine of this place,

Calling to mind the army of martyrs,

Those flower petals fluttering to the floor of this jail.

  • Where did it go the melodious-voiced bird of this jail?

From the storm of calamity to gardens and groves!

So many a Majnun in these solitary rooms

Lay burning in the fire of Laylis gloom

When would hearing a tale be equal to seeing it?

Can imagining imprisonment ever be the same as being here?

By His Holiness the Bab, the Prisoner of Chihriq

The exalted, the supreme Ali of imprisonment,

By that Ancient Essence of the Most Great Prison

The Blessed Beauty, the Abha of imprisonment

  • By the Great Branch, the Master of the world,

Who has dwelt a lifetime in the orison of Akka

By that Chosen Branch, the astute and powerful one,

The executor and the most cherished Guardian of the Akka prison,

By each of these, prison becomes a flower-garden to Hisami

So long as the Lord of this prison is pleased with me.

(Translated by J. Hatcher and A. Hemmat)

  • In longing after Thee, I am restless

in the daytime and the night season.

I shall never lift up my head from prostration at

your feet in the daytime and the night season.

O Thou in whose hands are the chains of those in love:

to this chain I am a prisoner in the daytime and the night season.

They asked that lovers sacrifice their lives and souls.

I give away my life and soul in the daytime and the night season.

    Rumi
