Todd appeared on the October 29, 1989 episode of the short-lived music television show Night Music. He performed three songs: "Can't Stop Running" and "Parallel Lines" from his new album, Nearly Human, and a surprise rendition of a number from the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, H.M.S. Pinafore (assisted by Taj Mahal and Michele Gray)!

Also appearing on backup vocals is Todd's longtime friend and fellow Utopian, Kasim Sulton.

The house band included such great players as Omar Hakim (drums), Tom Barney (bass), Hiram Bullock (guitar), Don Alias (percussion), Philippe Saisse (keyboards), and host David Sanborn (saxophone.)

  • What exactly isn't he profiting from? Even I would love to, I can't understand that certain line... :-( :-) Anyways: GREAT, GREAT song - AWESOME!

  • @MrKnopf - It's a jokey reference to a political scandal from the Reagan administration where in the middle '80s, the heads of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (H.U.D.) awarded government contracts for low income housing projects in exchange for contributions to Reagan's campaign fund.

And yeah, the song really is awesome!

  • This performance leaves me speechless. No surprise coming from the one, the only...he is still inspiring me into my fifties and started inspiring me when in my 20's. ..............the strength to run may soon be gone - now I watch the young ones coming and its on their legs I'm running into the arms of my God. He always gets it.

  • @pretorious700 Check out Austin City Limits on PBS.It usually airs Sat night with multiple reruns thoughout the week.Check your local PBS listings. Also pbs.org has full video of recent episodes.ACL was originally a show to highlight country-western music in the 70's but shows all artists now, especially ones that commercial radio won't play (Mumford and Sons,Arcade Fire, etc). All music performed live in the intimate and brand new Moody Theater-no lip-synching or auto-tuning!Enjoy!

  • Wow! I've watched this video so many times over the years and it never ceases to amaze me

  • That maybe one of his best vocal performances for my money anyway!

  • todd is has so many styles! love him!

  • This was a great show-what happened to creative songwriting and people PLAYING INSTRUMENTS and singing live?

  • Oh duh! It IS Kasim! I just read the video blurb!

  • What a cool song and a great arrangement! Todd's most underrated album. Is that Kasim Sulton from Utopia on vocals?

  • There is a bizarre rumour going around that Todd Rundgren dresses to the left. Is there any truth in this?

  • @ponchocervantes Todd is the one who inspired Prince.
