As a POW McCain broke down under torture and offered a "confession" to his North Vietnamese captors. Dramesi, in constrast, never said a disloyal word, and for his heroism was awarded two Air Force Crosses, one of the service's highest distinctions. McCain would later hail him as "one of the toughest guys I've ever met."

McCain was a lousy student. He graduated 894 out of 899-- a record of mediocrity he would continue as a pilot. He has created this myth of being an american hero because of his family's pull. Better and braver POWs have been ignored because they came from modest backgrounds! One such example is John Dramesi, an Air Force lieutenant colonel who was also imprisoned and tortured in Vietnam.

1. As a child he often held his breath until he passed out.

2. As a pilot he crashed three planes. After escaping death aboard the USS Forrestal, he left for R&R while the crew was still recovering bodies lost in the blaze.
