Are stations now 24-hour mostly because of cable or because of changes in regulations? Both? It's a question that's passed through my mind once in awhile.

I think absolutely both. But also, I'm sure they realized the cost of a skeleton staff and the electricity bill to stay on the air all night made more $ for them than just signing off for a few hours and then running a test pattern until daybreak. Infocrapmercials are paid air. Maybe they should run TPs with live popular local radio audio under them, and interject some regular sponsor ads along the way until about 6am..

@MSTS1 The restrictions limiting commercial activity on television (like infomercials, etc.) were lifted in 1984.
